Which path do you choose?
The choices we make on our path through life is the central theme of If/Then, a brand new Broadway musical which is heading out on its first national tour in 2015/2016. Written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the duo who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2010 for their musical Next to Normal, the show is introspective, emotionally charged and formally experimental, taking a rarely seen split narrative approach to the plot.
If/Then debuted on Broadway in 2014, with Let It Go singer Idina Menzel in the lead role. A box office hit, it proved yet another career defining part for the Tony-winning Menzel, after her roles in Rent and Wicked.
WHAT IS IF/THEN ABOUT?
If/Then is about starting over and the courage to fully explore life and the consequences of decisions.
Elizabeth has moved back to New York, nearing 40, she wants to start afresh and reboot her career as an urban planner. One day, following a peculiar experience in the park, she finds her future splitting into two: Liz and Beth. Liz seeks out new experiences and soon finds love with the dashing army doctor Josh. But what happens when everything isn't quite happy ever after? Beth takes a different approach, and the chaos of life affects her all at once, but then, how can we regret truly living?

Captivating
From open to close, this carried me through everything the characters were feeling. The cast was superb. Idina Menzel and her voice were amazing in person. THIS PRODUCTION REDEFINED MUSICALS FOR ME. It was an emotional, deeply moving piece. As soon as it was over, I wanted to go again! Given that I traveled 300 miles to see it, that's a commitment! The music created the ribbon that carried us through this experience and the lyrics warranted Master Story Teller status. This is an experience every theater goer should have. BONUS -- I loved the Nebraska jokes...and will take them home with me. ... Read more

Loved it in NY
We saw the show twice in NYC. Once in previews and once again in August. It's a complicated
contemporary story and requires a thinking audience. Keeping the two parallel
stories/characters straight takes paying close attention. But we absolutely loved it both times.
Of course we saw Idina Menze and the rest of the fabulous Boadway cast, but it would still be a
great show without her star power. It's not a show children would enjoy or understand. ... Read more
