What's Your Name Man? The Actors Who Have Played Hamilton

Author AbigailAbigail, January 22nd, 2020

They're young, scrappy and hungry!

Although Lin-Manuel Miranda is now a house-hold name his mega-musical sticks to its routes as it casts relatively unknown and racially diverse actors to be its leading man! Meet the men who have taken on the ten-dollar founding father.

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA (Off-Broadway, Broadway, Puerto Rico)

Now a star in his own right Lin-Manuel Miranda not only wrote and created Hamilton but also starred as A. Ham himself! The god-father of Hamilton starred as the titular character in the original off-Broadway run at the Public Theater to the continuously sold-out run at the Richard Rodgers Theater AND a sold-out charity run in Puerto Rico. Although his time is now spent on other projects don't give up on hope to see Miranda perform as Alexander once more!

MIGUEL CERVANTES (Chicago, Broadway)

Dallas born Miguel originated the coveted role in the production's first long-running regional production in Chicago! Before Hamilton Cervantes appeared in the Broadway productions of If/Then (2014) and American Idiot (2010) and appeared on TV shows like Madam Secretary and Royal Pains. Cervantes spends his time off-stage raising awareness and funds for epilepsy care and finding a cure, his daughter sadly passed away from the condition in 2019. Although the Chicago production has now ended Cervantes' Hamilton journey hasn't ended as he steps into the role of A. Ham on Broadway in 2020!

MICHAEL LUWOYE (Broadway, US Tour)

Beginning his acting career in 2011 Micahel Luwoye has appeared in regional productions of Once On This Island, Guys and Dolls and Othello! Luwoye made his off-broadway debut in the Second Stage Theater production of Invisible Thread in 2015 before making his Broadway debut as Alexander Hamilton alternate in 2016. Starring in the role full-time in the production's first National Tour, Luwoye transferred back to Broadway where he starred as Hamilton for a whole year!

JAMAEL WESTMAN (West End Production)

London was all of a buzz when the news broke that Hamilton would finally be heading to the West End in 2017. Jamael Westman was the lucky actor to land the starring role when the production began previews on December 6, 2017! Hamilton was only Westman's third professional stage gig having previously starred in productions at the Royal Court Theatre and at Shakespeare's Globe. Westman stayed with the production for two years, garnering an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in the process.

KARL QUEENSBOROUGH (West End Production)

An experienced stage performer Karl Queensborough joined the London cast of Hamilton as A. Ham alternate in 2019, becoming the title player full-time in 2020! Queensborough has also appeared in many British TV programs and several Radio Play as well as countless stage productions.

JOSEPH MORALES (US Tour, Chicago)

Morales is no stranger to the works of Lin-Manuel Miranda and even starred in the Broadway production and national tours of In The Heights! After touring in the cast of Bombay Dreams and the national tour of If/Then Morales joined the Chicago cast as a Hamilton alternate in 2017. Morales took up the title role full time in the Philip Tour in 2018, where he's been ever since.

EDRED UTOMI (US Tour)

University of San Diego graduate Edred Utomi is a favorite in the local San Diego theatre scene! Utomi joined the company of Hamilton in the Philip Tour in 2017 where he performed as a stand-by for Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and George Washington. In 2018 Utomi joined the cast of Hamilton's second tour (Angelica) replacing Austin Scott in the title role.

AUSTIN SCOTT (US Tour, Broadway)

Scott kicked off his Hamilton journey when he joined the national tour in 2018. He then transferred to the Broadway production where he wowed in the titular role! Since bursting onto the scene Scott has caught the eye of the casting team behind the hit FX series, Pose, where he starred as swoon-worthy lifeguard in series two.
